Progress Log
20/9/2008
It's that update time again. Computer problems
in last weeks meant that I could not make good on my promises - sorry!
When asking contributors for last additions (I often do this just before an
update) I got such a flood of information, I have been unable to add it all.
This means another update due in a few weeks. Those of you responsible for all
this hard work - Thanks☺
6188 Individuals - 1569 Ferdinandus, 321 Ferdinand(s), 72 Ferdinandusse, 2310
Marriages and 318 Images
5/5/2008
Full update of the website in progress -
content that is not looks. I have entered all information I have received to
date, just some odds and ends to puzzle over left. Lots of material from usual
contributors, but special thanks to Pietje Ferdinandus who has again contributed
a large amount of data.
Several new contacts from family members who have stumbled onto these pages and
were able to clarify some matters.
The forest of trees that was the Ceylon branch now make 1 large tree (over 800
people) 1 medium tree and 6 small ones.
I have good hope of combining them all in the next year.
P&P completion has been delayed as it takes masses of time, which I simply do
not have at the moment.
6066 Individuals - 1563 Ferdinandus, 289 Ferdinand(s), 72 Ferdinandusse, 2269
Marriages and 308 Images
(some double-counting used to go on for the Ferdinandus family as all aliases
were counted as individuals, corrected retrospectively)
1/1/2008
I had to pull the last version before this
update as it contained restricted data.
To all of you who asked about this : this website is staying where it is and
will always be updated as and when I have both time and inclination.
Although I have plenty of the latter, I do have less and less of the former.
5943 Individuals (1531 Ferdinandus, 273 Ferdinand(s), 72 Ferdinandusse), 2229
Marriages and 296 Images
30/9/2007
Long time no hear. Apologies to all
contributors, been too busy with other things.
P&P now mostly available. Lots of additions on the Moluccan/Indonesian branches.
5920 Individuals (1530 Ferdinandus, 267 Ferdinand(s), 72 Ferdinandusse), 2220
Marriages and 294 Images
4/2/2007
P&P in final proofing stages, very tiresome.
All PDF's updated.
5750 Individuals (1505 Ferdinandus, 266 Ferdinand(s), 72 Ferdinandusse), 2158
Marriages and 293 Images
8/1/2007
Finally got round to another update. Lots
unfinished, but I could not wait any longer. There are still data I have not
dealt with, and there is also the P&P project to be finalised. All of that to be
completed in the next week or so I hope. Much progress on the main Moluccan
tree.
PDF files not yet updated but please give me a another week..
5626 Individuals (1464 Ferdinandus, 263 Ferdinand(s), 72 Ferdinandusse), 2121
Marriages and 280 Images
18/10/2006
Well, another update. Lots of data received,
again my thanks to all contributors. The Moluccan / Indonesian tree has started to solidify
and the new tree starting with Christiaan Ferdinandus is now as large as the two
Dutch trees, possibly even the largest one. Download from the
download page. Progress Chart
updated as well, just for the fun of it, and talking about fun, have you had a
look at the Heraldry Page?
5356 Individuals (1422 Ferdinandus, 261 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse),
2041
Marriages and 252 Images
30/9/2006
Again update long overdue. Not so many new
individuals but database getting better and more info on individuals all the
time. I have also been able to knit several loose branches into larger trees.
Great news for Burgher descendants, all the burgher genealogies are going to be
available in digital form on the web. A group of genealogy enthusiasts has
secured the blessing and cooperation of the DBU. This project will take some
time in setting up and realisation though. In the end we will be able to have
meaningful discussions on data and some oft-repeated myths will be able to be
laid to rest.
5066 Individuals (1314 Ferdinandus, 261 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1953
Marriages and 236 Images
25/5/2006
5000 individuals passed! No time really
but update long overdue. Please keep all the information coming, even if it
takes a while sometimes,
I will get back to you. More baptismal records from 17th century Amsterdam are
now online and I will enter these in the database.
I have dropped some download options from the download page, you can still get
them but you will have to e-mail me with your request.
I kept making mistakes when doing so many in a row, and it stopped being fun. AA
downloads are proving popular though, so they have been updated.
5005 Individuals (1307 Ferdinandus, 239 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1939
Marriages and 235 Images
22/3/6
Few days off, time to clear up all the info
that has been coming in. Lots more pictures added as well.
4869 Individuals (1266 Ferdinandus, 231 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1897
Marriages and 233 Images
1/3/2006
Problems with Ancestral Author solved thanks to
incredible service from Ancestral Softworks.
All AA files now downloadable on the
Download page
26/2/2006
Lots of additions, some corrections. Trial of
Ancestral Author for PDF text files for the Download page,
but I have not quite got the hang of it yet, so some trees are not available in
that format.
4717 Individuals (1207 Ferdinandus, 212 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1844
Marriages and 214 Images
17/12/05
Lots of minor corrections / additions. A few
new correspondents. Thanks for all your information.
4521 Individuals (1188 Ferdinandus, 177 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1786
Marriages and 214 Images
28/10/5
Lots of minor and major corrections. 10
questions on the Help Me page answered by contributors. Thanks. (There are
another 15 to answer!)
Quite a few pictures added, even to the family pages. Sri Lanka tree now
swallowing up lots of small Ceylon branches.
4492 Individuals (1187 Ferdinandus, 179 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1777
Marriages and 213 Images
2/10/5
More minor corrections and additions no new
Ferdinand(s) or Ferdinandus(se) added. 2 more images though.
4444 Individuals (1172 Ferdinandus, 174 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1762
Marriages and 199 Images
27/8/5
Lots of minor corrections to all the stuff
recently added. Thanks for al your checking! Few people added. Almanak page
completed. Thanks you-know-who-you-are. Got in touch with a branch of the
Ferdinandus NOT Ferdinands family in Sri Lanka. Intrigued where that is going to
lead us.
4431 Individuals (1172 Ferdinandus, 174 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1758
Marriages and 197 Images
16/8/5
Lots of information coming in again. Too much
to add all in one go. Lots of progress on the Moluccan tree though, thanks!
Also quite a few images added, that always makes me happy. Gravestones slowly
being expanded, well see for yourselves.
4419 Individuals (1165 Ferdinandus, 174 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1755
Marriages and 197 Images
16/6/5
Been away for a few weeks. Just added all the
data sent to me in the mean time. Thanks for all the contributions again! Please
have a look at the extended Gravestones page. Quite a
few peolpe added, but only a few Ferdinand(u)s(se).
4128 Individuals (1130 Ferdinandus, 172 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1667
Marriages and 171 Images
21/5/5
You may not want to be the centre of attention,
but thanks for all the information this week! Census, Ferdinandus in print and
Graves sections all expanded. Ferdinandus family in the USA getting much clearer
now. Now in need of data from Antwerp, Belgium. Any Ferdinandus family members
there?
I will have to split the Ferdinandus-in-print section soon as now 142 images on
index page. Not now, too busy.
4076 Individuals (1127 Ferdinandus, 172 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1645
Marriages and 171 Images
14/5/5
Well, we passed the 4000 mark. Not bad going
for a project started in July 2002 I think. No replies or progress on the Frank
and Isabella front unfortunately. Some more contacts laid though, and some Dutch
resources coming on line now, many of them before 1811. (This is when the DTB
books started) Also started an "in limbo" page. I had
not realised before these people were not counted by the webexport function, so
there is an extra 28 Ferdinandus members from that source. A similar thing has
happened with the images. Some people have sent me their photo's, but not to be
published on the web. These images are still in the database, but are not
counted by the export function. Now corrected. BRP 17 added to IGV list. All downloads
updated.
4020 Individuals (1115 Ferdinandus, 172 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1624
Marriages and 168 Images
16/4/2005
Radja's of Haruku extended, new page
VOC archief, thanks to webteam Kamarian.
Increasing amount of contributions from people who have done their research with
the help of these pages and then later when they have new data of relevance to
me, let me know about it. Thank you very much! Currently trying to find out
about Frank en Isabella Ferdinandus who were born in
Flanders about 1845, any suggestions?
3926 Individuals (1053 Ferdinandus, 168 Ferdinand(s), 71 Ferdinandusse), 1583
Marriages and 157 Images
11/3/5
Bought the Ferdinandusse.com website as well.
Both sites now refer to the Ferdinandus(se) site. Some further progress on the
Ceylon tree. Now also making some headway with the USA tree. There are quite a
few different immigrants into the USA called Ferdinandus, and it will lead to
several trees, but it looks likely they will all link in some way to the Dutch
trees. Some problems in the Connecticut tree solved with help from descendants
and Dwight Finger who runs the Finger Family site. Also some success after
contacting 10 Dutch Genealogy researchers via the Contact service of the NGV.
(thanks for that suggestion) Finally been able to prove some doubles, so that
reduces the database in number but improves in quality.
3892 Individuals (1051 Ferdinandus, 167 Ferdinand(s), 59 Ferdinandusse), 1570
Marriages and 163 Images
3/3/5
The Ceylon tree is rapidly growing into a quite
large tree. About 400 people in there for now. I added some pages to the Sources
page so you can see some of the original data. Still a lot there to be gained
but currently only 16 loose ends. (a doddle compared to the 400 or so loose ends
in the Moluccas / Indonesia section) Also been in touch with an American
relative who is planning to photograph all Ferdinandus gravestones in New Haven
Connecticut. So far only been in touch with 2 people from the Ceylon branch,
both of them asking for information, but they may have things to contribute
later.
Still, a steady stream of contributions from all over, I am very grateful,
please keep it coming. Help-me page reinstated.
3851 Individuals (1050 Ferdinandus, 164 Ferdinand(s), 59 Ferdinandusse), 1549
Marriages and 163 Images
12/2/2005
The good thing about coming back to a project you have ignored
for a while is the seemingly rapid progress you are making initially. Simply
culling GenLias again, brought more than a hundred new references, and checking
all the old references showed I had not entered data as completely and with
references as I now strive to. So, lots of professions entered and almost 100
new names added. Genlias page updated (Sources page).
Also found several parts of a Ceylon Tree, that combined into a larger one,
starting with Johannes Ferdinandus (P3396) who was a VOC soldier. Many of his
descendents have changed their name to Ferdinand or Ferdinands. Added to the
database, also added to the download page in PDF and in Treedraw format. (all
missing links on download page now restored)
3494 Individuals (1044 Ferdinandus, 41 Ferdinand, 59 Ferdinandusse), 1400
Marriages and 163 Images
26/1/2005
I guess it's time for a new start. I moved
house on 7/4/4 to a large, but unfortunately not quite inhabitable house. In the
last 8 months we have removed walls (6) a staircase, a chimney and several
chimneybreasts. We have replaced floors, part of the roof, installed floor
heating and new radiators in parts and generally worked hard to make all the
rooms warm and shielded from the outside. Apart from the main bedroom and
en-suite the house is now fine, though the decor will need some serious
attention. Anyway, that's my excuse. Time to pick up the Ferdinandus saga again.
Apologies to all of you who have almost (I hope not quite) given up on me.
Update today has not quite all the changes rung through by everybody but most.
New update in a few weeks I hope.
3307 Individuals (1013 Ferdinandus, 57 Ferdinandusse), 1329
Marriages and 164 Images
7/2/2004
Ferdinandusse tree finally completed, well, all
my data added that is. There are only a few questions about this family. Mostly
it just build one nice tree. See it on the web or download the descendants file
from the download page. Not much Ferdinandus activity, but some interesting
responses that might show up some information later.
3273 Individuals (1006 Ferdinandus, 55 Ferdinandusse), 1323
Marriages and 163 Images
24/1/2004
Quick update as new branch added. This is the
Ferdinandusse branch from Zeeland. Not strictly anything to do with us, but I
(and others) regularly encounter people listed as Ferdinandus who end up being
from the Ferdinandusse branch (is there just the one ?) As the solution to
Problem 5 and 6 ("Help me" page) delivered quite a
large chunk of the Ferdinandusse tree I have added it to the database. Solution
to problems 8 and 9 may also be rooted in the Ferdinandusse tree.
2852 Individuals (1006 Ferdinandus, 14 Ferdinandusse), 1107 Marriages and 163 Images
17/1/2004
Slow progress over the last few weeks. I am
having a bit of a slow period myself as I am trying to make all the arrangements
that come with buying a new house. As it is a property with some of its origins
in the 17thcentury it does need quite a lot of checking. Fortunately trusted
contributors are having no slow down at all and all progress is due to them. The
Dutch loose ends after 1811 are being tied up rapidly, mainly thanks to the Help
page questions being answered by you. Some other people have got into touch with
me but even more people keep promising me data that never seems to appear.
2805 Individuals (1007 Ferdinandus), 1084 Marriages and 163
Images.
21/12/2003
Time for consolidation again. Thank you for al
your corrections. Several doubles removed. Problem 3 solved and thus moved
another "loose" branch into the Zaandam tree. Now only 4 remaining "loose"
branches to the Dutch Ferdinandus family after 1811. ( I do still have about 40
"lost families" in this section ) Indonesian section is starting to show more
signs of aggregation, but I still have 1 large 26 medium-sized and 52 small
branches. There are also about 100 loose families. That may well take a few
years to sort out. New sections added on the Sources page for several types of
announcement cards, Ellis Island Records and the first 50 years of almanacs for
the Dutch East-Indies.
2775 Individuals (1005 Ferdinandus), 1069 Marriages and 163 Images.
10/12/2003
Finished Bloys van Treslong Prins. Almanak data
received (Thanks!) and published on the sources page. It is clear these new data
contain lots of confirmation of previous data, which is quite necessary. Also it
appears already to give some connections between people at the time. Hundreds of
pages though. That'll keep me busy ! All downloads updated.
2771 Individuals (1005 Ferdinandus), 1069 Marriages and 163 Images.
4/12/2003
Slowly working through the Bloys van Treslong
Prins collection. I have been promised more data from Almanak searches. The 1st problem on the Help me
page has also been solved. I have added some new ones.
2631 Individuals (934 Ferdinandus), 998 Marriages and 163 Images.
Some people have told me the numbers are incorrect as there are a few less
marriages and individuals on the website then I lay claim to. This is because
although these people are in the database, they have requested not to be
published and are therefore not on the web.
27/11/2003
Stopped with the Adobe gallery function as
someone noticed some of the pictures were being left out. This is true as it
does not seem to recognise some perfectly good JPEG files. Back to FrontPage
then. More images added.
The web counter has now passed 25.000 visits!
2582 Individuals (903 Ferdinandus), 978 Marriages and 163 Images
20/11/2003
Consolidation going on the site. I have been
busy trying to identify by P-number all the people in the
IGV and BvTP collections. This has made clearer
the task still ahead. It also opens up the way for you all out there to identify
which references I have not married up with P-numbers yet and so help me out.
Busy trying to identify people on all the photo's I have received, so I have
some work to do in adding images now.
2578 Individuals (903 Ferdinandus), 975 Marriages and 133 Images
23/9/2003
About 15 doubles removed on searching the
database. More yet entered. More pictures entered in the newspaper section. Got
fed up with FrontPage's gallery function. Now using Adobe's, and though I do not
have the hang of it yet, it already saves me time. This section is now called
"Ferdinandus In Print" 758 images scanned and some added. More later once
identified.
2568 Individuals (906 Ferdinandus), 974
Marriages and 127 Images
18/9/2003
Lots of data entered. Pile now reduced to 20
sheets or so. Please keep sending all the information. Started with the Bloys
van Treslong Prins collection, and have entered a page on this in the sources
section. Also updated the GenLias page, which brought 16 more references and
some interesting connections. Finally connections have started to appear between
some Indonesian bits of the family tree. I am hopeful a real tree will finally
emerge. The data I have not entered yet is all very fragmented, and I may
not enter this for some time. I am planning to start scanning pictures soon.
2543 Individuals (883 Ferdinandus), 970 Marriages and 112 Images
15/8/2003
Steady progress on entering data. Pile of data still to be
entered now no more than about 100 sheets.
New section in Sources on the Radja's of Haruku (just a list) After entering my
data I plan to start on scanning a large amount of pictures , mainly to do with
the family. (there must be at least 800) Added 8 clippings to the
Newspaper section.
2183 Individuals (722 Ferdinandus), 822 Marriages and 112 Images
6/8/2003
Well, that was a hard slog of clearing up nearly 3000 records
for the data protection act. Hopefully with this and new procedures for web
publishing in place, there will be no further problems. Not done very much data
entering as such, but more is to come shortly.
2115 Individuals (692 Ferdinandus) 797 Marriages and 112 Images
13/7/2003
Hi. Slowly getting the hang of things again. Cleaned up my
piles of data to be added to the files. Much of it quite boring stuff, adding
sources to data and setting privacy levels. Not stuff that will show on the
website, but still essential. I also still have lots of people to be entered,
but these are mainly individuals whom I cannot connect to anyone else in the
database. Thanks everyone for continuing to send me information. Sources page
extended. Is there anyone out there who has some way of accessing the Arsip
Nasional In Jakarta ? There is undoubtedly a lot of data at the A.N., but so far
I have not been able to get permission to go into this archive. Anyone ideas?
2058 Individuals (681 Ferdinandus) 773 Marriages and 108 Images
11/6/2003
My son Lucas was born 13/3/2003. Rather a busy time for our
family. I have not had a lot of time to do much else. People have fortunately
been very patient, and are still sending me data. Unfortunately I lost some of
my outlook database due to plain forgetfulness when re-installing windows.
Genealogy database is of course intact. I hope to start entering more data soon.
2045 Individuals (675 Ferdinandus) 768 Marriages and 107 Images
8/3/2003
Tidying up time for the database. Lots of loose bits of
information added. More contacts acquired, thank you for the information.
Still lots of data lying around to be added to the database, but now slowly
working my way down the pile.
2034 Individuals (675 Ferdinandus) 765 Marriages and 107 Images in the
GEDCOM Database
25/2/2003
Saparoea books done. Thanks to everybody for corrections and
additions. I am eagerly awaiting your further researches.
2018 Individuals (661 Ferdinandus) 726 Marriages and 107 Images in the GEDCOM
Database
29/1/2003
Getting on with the Saparoea books, but very slow. Pictures
and corrections still coming in nicely. Got my new job now though, and have been
a very busy bee on several other fronts. Guestimating another 2-3 weeks for the
Saparoea books.
1857 Individuals (632 Ferdinandus) 703 Marriages and 105 images in the
GEDCOM Database.
11/1/2003
Busy with the Saparoea books. Lots of corrections from
several sources entered. Slowly getting a bit on top of the backlog. Please keep
sending those pictures.
1799 Individuals (628 Ferdinandus) 683 Marriages and 92 images in the GEDCOM
Database.
29/12/2002
Finished entering the data from the Banda books, now
I've got the Saparoea books to do and that will bring me a bit more up to data
than I've been for a while. Because my backlog of data to be entered was so
large I have not been very active in contacting Ferdinandus members. This will
hopefully change in the new year. Still not done much about the Delft cards. New
entries on the sources page for the list of Ferdinandus war graves, from the
Stichting Oorlogsgraven, and for "De huisvrouw en de Kapitein" ,another article
on the resistance in then Nederlandsch-Indië during
WW2 against the Japanese. IGV page extended. Still pictures coming in to
be placed on the web, but please could you send high quality pictures (at least
100kb compressed and preferably a LOT bigger. Remember, I do not mind large
e-mails.
1702 individuals (605 Ferdinandus) 639 Marriages and 93 images in the
GEDCOM Database.
17/11/2002
It's been a busy 2 weeks. Finally entered all the Ambon
Reformed church baptise data. These data are not very complete, and contain only
2 generations per dataset. This means they are not easy to interlink, and there
will therefore be a number of people in the database with identical names, who
are almost certainly the same person, but for which I have (as yet) no proof. I
have been contacted by family members from Germany, Indonesia, and South Africa,
all in the last few days. That Google number 1 spot must have something to do
with it. Have scanned 125 cards on B, D & M from the Delft branch. They need
indexing and compressing ... give me a week or so. Had some responses to the
picture request now, keep it coming please.
1600 individuals (586
Ferdinandus) 600 Marriages and 81 images on the web.
2/11/2002
Been on holiday for 2 weeks, so no updates for a while. All updated today. 1243 individuals in database. Visited Tiel archive with my father. We found 2 further generations back. Also lots more Ferdinandus-family members found from the 17th century. It looks like we will be able to extend the tree back to 1615 in the not too distant future. Also received pack of about 100 birth, marriage and death announcement cards from the Delft branch, accompanied by about 1000 pictures. Looks like I'll be scanning for a while. Early indications there may be a connection between the Delft and the Zaandam branch. This would be around 1645. Found an early Dutch Ferdinandus in the Dutch East-Indies. This is Jan Ferdinandus a translator in Macassar (now Ujung Pandjang in Sulawesi) in 1701. Not much response to my request for images of Ferdinandus family members.
6/10/2002
Zaandam branch expanded thanks to information from Karel
(P1080) . Lots of information received on M. Ferdinandus ( see Indonesia page)
who was in the resistance in then Nederlandsch-Indië
during WW2 against the Japanese. Most of this from Warry Ferdinandus (P835). The
stories about the resistance in Nederlandsch-Indië
during WW2, are going to turn into a new section. Many thanks to Carry for all
his cooperation and contributions, and again Lucille, who is not only sending me
a lot of information, but is also very helpful in making suggestions, sending
corrections and translating into Bahasa.
All downloads updated. 1141 individuals on file.
21/9/2002
IGV sheet completed with AMBA reference , contents of
Ferdinandus family print-work from CBG received (Thanks Lucille) I plan to put
this on the web in the next week. (84 items) Ferdinandus
family members with an Indonesian background keep are suddenly appearing from
everywhere. Many with great stories and all with data to add. Thank you all for
the information received so far, I'm looking forward to our further cooperation.
Planning to start parallel pages in Bahasa / Dutch / English. "Familie Kaarten"
from the Amsterdam Registry office added , "Cards" page added, "Family Printwork"
added. (all on "Sources" page) 1109 individuals in
database.
Download page added with descendants file downloads.
14/9/2002
Bahasa Indonesia and Dutch added as category headings on index
page. Plans to translate all text pages in genealogy section in 3 languages,
Dutch, English and Bahasa Indonesia. More contacts now coming in from Moluccan
Ferdinandus community. Hopefully they will all send data on their direct
ancestors. The Moluccan branch will soon be the largest in the database. It
appears some Moluccan Ferdinandus-members did not realise there was at least one
Dutch branch.
EJF text updated. Data on IGV sheet now complete, apart from the AMBA[264]
reference.
Now 959 individuals in database. Kith & Kin pro 2 just released. Nice new
features, you should soon see the result.
3/9/2002
Permission received from Lucille, 100 odd people added from the Moluccan branch. Far too much
work to do.
Will take me a few weeks to get organised again.
Piles of data to add besides this new project. People in database now 900.
Letters have been dropping into Ferdinandus mail boxes this morning. Reactions
already coming in. Thanks again to Carry. Is this project getting out of hand
already?
Data is now coming in faster than I can verify / edit / enter data. What have I
started ?
(Keep it coming though!)
31/8/2002
Got in touch with Lucille Ferdinandus, who has researched her (Indonesian) branch of the Ferdinandus name.
She has as yet no evidence the families are linked. It also appears likely there
are more than one family Ferdinandus in Indonesia.
She has already sent me a file on one of her ancestors. I may publish this if she
agrees.
It will also reduce Marcel's work at the CBG library, as Lucille has already
accounted for half
of the Nederlandsch-Indië
references he was going to examine.
Lucille also speaks and writes Bahasa, but with all this new information I
suddenly do not quite know where to go next.
29/8/2002
Further data added, now 765 Individuals in the database. Plans for writing to
all Dutch Ferdinandus family members suddenly at acute stage as Carry has basically
done all the work. Letters to go out soon. Marcel involved in checking on 26
references to Ferdinandus in
Nederlands-Indie Genealogy magazines. Lots of Images received so far, too
many to add to these pages. Please keep sending them, I still do not have mug
shots of 95% of people in the database.
23/8/2002
Thanks to Carry Ferdinandus, I have added a large branch of the Ferdinandus
family with its roots in Zaandam.
I am still adding data to that branch, as much of my information at home
can now be connected to firm parts of the tree.
There are also lots of data from GenLias to be added, and I am planning to start
adding pictures to the site.
I am not yet sure whether to add them as a separate
picture section or to include them in the Genealogy pages.
I am also trying to clean up the database. There were a few doubles and there are still nearly 200 unused P/F codes. As I am adding new names all the time these 'gaps' should slowly disappear over the next 2-3 months.
I am much in need of someone who can read and write Bahasa Indonesia. I have no way of getting in touch with Bahasa speaking members of our Family.

There are many branches of the Ferdinandus family. There is for instance a very large (quite possibly the largest) branch of the family in Indonesia. They live all over, but there seems to be an especially large group in the Moluccas. I have next to no knowledge of this branch of the family and would love to get more information on them.
Please contact me for all contributions, comments, requests. I appreciate all the help I am getting, and can always do with lots more. Have you got time to dive into the archives ? Can you do a web trawl and speak Bahasa ? Contact me for all these and more on Genealogy@Ferdinandus.com

Website started. I've owned the URL for several years, hoping
to start a site with Ferdinandus Genealogy information.
Well, here goes.
The origin of the Ferdinandus name is not known to me. That does not stop me from speculating though. The name seems to crop up initially in the later part of the 16th century in the central Netherlands, in Zoelmond en Culemborg. At the time surnames were generally the Father's first name with an ending indicating "son of". The surname Ferdinandus would then be "son of Ferdinand". At the time the first name Ferdinand was not very common locally. It may have been that of a Spanish soldier or citizen, as the 80 year war between Holland and Spain "raged" from 1568 to 1648.
Ferdinandus is of course also the Latin version of the name Ferdinand. As royalty often use the Latin version of their names for official purposes (Coins etc) there are a lot of references to Ferdinandus from this corner. However, these are all people called Ferdinand by their FIRST name. Interesting, but nothing to do with the Ferdinandus family.
On trawling the web blindly, the same thing happens. Lots and lots of references to Ferdinandus, but nearly always as a FIRST name. As most of these names belong to Dutch and Belgian individuals and are consequently found on sites in Dutch/Flemish, it may not necessarily be obvious whether a first or last name is intended unless you speak the language.
